The communications regulator in Canada has announce a C$750 million or $560 million in funding for companies, such as Telus Corp., BCE Inc. and Rogers Communications Inc. can use to help subsidize high-speed internet projects found in rural areas of the country.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission believes broadband internet is a basic service and should be available across the country. The new funding will be distributed over about five years to applications from telecommunications carriers.
